Rashayla Brown is an interdisciplinary artist and independent researcher. She received her BA in Sociology and African-American Studies with a concentration in Art History from Yale University in 2004. As a student and DJ, she has traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Caribbean to conduct research projects on music subcultures and the effect of popular culture on identity. Upon graduation, she taught herself graphic design and opened a graphic design and apparel business, Selah Vibe, Inc. While working as a designer, she began using photography and text to combine her interests in cultural studies and conceptual art. To further develop her practice, she is now studying photography, video, and new media at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with the intent of eventually pursuing an MFA. Her work primarily deals with how mythology, music, spirituality, and popular culture relates to the formation of personal identity.
